Gambling in COVID-19 Lockdown in the UK: Depression, Stress, and Anxiety

To combat the spread of COVID-19, UK Government implemented a range “lockdown” measures. Lockdown has necessarily changed gambling habits gamblers in UK, and impact these measures on mental health is unknown. understand lockdown gamblers, April 2020, after ~6 weeks lockdown, participants ( N = 1,028, 72% female) completed an online questionnaire. Gambling engagement data was collected for pre-lockdown via Brief Problem Screen (BPGS) allowing to be classified as Non-Gamblers (NG), Non-Problem Gamblers (NPG) or Potential (PPG). The Depression, Stress, Anxiety Scale (DASS21) used measure depression, stress, anxiety scores both pre- during-lockdown. Results indicate that stress increased across whole sample. Participants PPG group reported higher each sub scale at baseline during lockdown. Increases were observed DASS21 subscale, gambler group, however despite variable significance effect sizes, magnitude increases did not differ between groups. had significant participants; whilst depression remain highest potential problem status affect changes scores.
